BYJAKE STUMP CHARLESTON DAILY MAIL
CHARLESTON — The Nationwide Tour is returning to West Virginia again this year, but this time the winning purse is its largest ever — $1 million.
While the best golfer will be walking away with a hefty paycheck, the state’s economy could benefit as well.
Gov. Joe Manchin and PGA Tour officials have announced that the Nationwide Tour Players Cup will be held July 7-13 at the Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport.
Officials say the tour will bring the state worldwide exposure.
The tour will be televised on the Golf Channel, which reaches more than 100 million homes worldwide.
Kelly Goes, secretary of the West Virginia Department of Commerce, said, “The print, electronic and Internet exposure, coupled with the pictures from West Virginia and commercials that will air during the telecasts, will spotlight our state as a wonderful tourism destination all West Virginians know it to be.”
The Nationwide Tour Players Cup is the Tour’s premier, inseason event. It will feature 144 players, based on the Nationwide Tour’s money list.
The Nationwide Tour is the PGA’s developmental tour.
Manchin said tour officials were so impressed with the beauty of the state that it wasn’t a tough decision for them to choose West Virginia.
“We’re going to be reaching the world, if you will,” the governor said. “This is going to bring a lot of people in. They’re usually a different group of people.
They spend an awful lot of money and have the means to travel. It’s just wonderful, and we’ll be able to showcase the state on the Golf Channel, the magazines and the Web sites.”
The state will be featured in various PGA Tour and Nationwide Tour promotional materials, such as Partners magazine and the official PGA site at www.pgatour.com.
Nationwide Tour President Bill Calfee cited a few reasons why PGA officials chose West Virginia as the host.
“The support of the state of West Virginia, a terrific venue in Pete Dye Golf Club and a perfect July date,” he said.
AWest Virginian also will get the chance to design the Tour’s winning trophy. The Division of Tourism soon will announce criteria for choosing an artisan to design the trophy
