I guess one of the reasons that I get sooo extremely upset about the numerous Coal mining tragedies is because I grew up in the culture. My dad was a Deep coal miner since I was a little girl. He just retired from the mine 2 years ago. Every coal mining accident always reminds me.. That could be my Dad.. And then I realize. That is someone's Dad. That is someone's husband, or son or brother ..
These are people that are in danger for sure every day.. But it really really seems that lately non union mine workers are at more risk of danger because proper safety measure and self rescue equipment after an accident.
47 people died last year in a mine..
47 families didn't have dad come home..
disgusting because nothing is being done but lip service.

The real story is that the companies don't follow the safety rules. Sure they tell the inspectors they do, but when they get caught they blame the workers. It's break the rules or loose your job.
