MORGANTOWN -- West Virginia University football players J.T. Thomas III and Ellis Lankster were arrested early Sunday and charged with transporting and receiving stolen property, according to Morgantown police.
Mountaineers Coach Rich Rodriguez released a statement Sunday afternoon, stating he was aware of the "off-campus situation" and would not make further comment until he learned more about the arrests.
"I am investigating at this time and will make the determination about their status within the football program after all the facts are in," Rodriguez said.
Rodriguez's next moves could be significant ones for the nation's No. 3-ranked team. Both players were competing for starting spots and practicing with the first team, Thomas at linebacker and Lanskter at cornerback, the two deepest positions on the defense.
Thomas a 6-foot-2, 200-pound redshirt freshman from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., is the son of J.T. Thomas II, a WVU linebacker from 1994-95. The younger Thomas played in the first three games in 2006 before suffering an ankle injury that eventually forced him to take a medical redshirt.
He rose on the depth chart in spring practice and hadn't regressed in summer camp. Thomas sat out Saturday's scrimmage to rest a sore groin.
Lankster, a 5-10, 190-pound transfer from Jones County (Miss.) Junior College, enrolled in January and quickly adjusted to the Mountaineers' zone coverage. A native of Whistler, Ala., Lankster moved up in the spring and stayed steady this summer.
At Jones County last year, he had 62 tackles and six interceptions, but was also an All-America kick returner.
Morgantown police said Lankster and Thomas were arrested at approximately 1:51 a.m. Sunday, then processed and lodged at Monongalia County's holding facility awaiting arraignment. They appeared before a magistrate later in the morning and were released.
Additional details of the arrests have not been made available by police. News reports, with no attribution or sourcing, have stated that a computer that was reported stolen was found in Lankster's car, with Thomas also in the car at the time of the arrest.
Neither player participated in WVU's Fan Day activities Sunday.
The players' actions went directly against a warning Rodriguez issued after the scrimmage.
"I can't follow 130 guys all around campus 24 hours a day," he said. "They've got to make the right decisions and keep focused. We talked at length about it all week and we talked at length about it (Friday) night about keeping focus and knowing what they're here for and not getting distracted."
Unknowingly clairvoyant, Rodriguez admitted he was more concerned about that weekend than any other because it's the weekend students return to campus for the fall semester.
"Our guys can't afford to run around and play around," Rodriguez said. "Our guys have a curfew tonight (at) 11 o'clock.
"The people that hang around with them in the dorms and downtown may not. Probably don't. Our guys have got to be different, but I think they understand that. I hope they do. I better not be getting any late night phone calls."

This whole thing has me really upset. How in the world can any one, let alone 2 players, blow off curfew by close to 3 hours the first weekend it's in force?
If they are in their rooms by 11:00 this probably doesn't happen.

I agree..
Also think Rodriguez will get to the bottom of this.
On a brighter note for all of us.. Vick pled guilty today and that will be the buzz and hopefully WVU can recover from yet another embarrassing blemish.

I'm sure you were- I felt badly leaving you alone in that den of wolves- especially Kid Sampson and Model Citizen- they're both extremely sharp-tongued. VT Fans that absolutely love to ride Mountaineers and the BE in general. One or both of them must have said something to get the thread deleted. I'll try to find out...

It doesn't matter.. This is why i like THIS forum.
I live in pensacola and have to defend WVU every day.. It gets tiresome after a while and I'd rather NOT be in yet another situation like that in my free time..

That said, I enjoy the quick-hitting pace of that board- if you give it a chance, especially while you are still building up this one, I think you will eventually find it quite addictive.
