MORGANTOWN— The nationally ranked West Virginia University women’s basketball team pulled away steadily in the second half to dispose of Concord University, 89-56, in an exhibition game Sunday afternoon at the Coliseum.
Coach Mike Carey used all 14 players and in different combinations against the smaller-but-scrappy Lady Lions, who are favored to capture the West Virginia College Conference championship.
“At times there were sparks out there, but I expected a little more from our seven seniors,” said Carey, whose team is ranked No. 18 by The Associated Press and No. 22 by USA Today/ESPN.
“I was disappointed in our intensity, execution and rebounding. We’ve got a lot of work to do. You’ll see if we’re better on Friday (against Canisius in the season’s opener).”
Concord stayed with the Mountaineers for slightly more than 10 minutes. The Lady Lions jumped out to a 4-0 lead, then there were ties at 4 and 9 along with five lead changes.
Leading by just 20-16 at the 10-minute mark, WVU staged a 13-4 spurt for a 33-20 advantage and it was 40-25 at halftime.
The largest lead of the second half was 35 points at 89-54 with less than a minute remaining in the game. Just three WVU players logged as many as 20 minutes.
West Virginia shot 58.1 percent from the field (36-62) to 41.3 percent (19-46) and managed a 35-22 margin in rebounds.
Olayinka Sanni, 6-2 senior center, led the winning attack with 21 points and six rebounds in just 17 minutes. She shot 8-for-10 from the field and 5-for-7 from the foul line.
Meg Bulger, who came off the bench and played a team-high 22 minutes, was next with 11 points and five rebounds. Lateefah Joye chipped in 10 points, freshman Liz Repella nine and Chakhia Cole and La Quita Owens tallied eight points each.
Ashley Powell dished out a game-high six assists.
Lyndsey Repass, 5-7 junior guard, paced Concord with 19 points while playing 25 minutes. She missed only one of eight field-goal attempts. Samm Nester, 6-0 senior, was next with nine points. Amber Showalter, 5-11 junior, had six points and six rebounds.
Bulger, coming back after two major knee operations, seemed to perform better as the game progressed. “I felt pretty good,” she said. “I still have a long way to go, but I didn’t think about it.
“I’m OK physically and mentally. I just wanted to be back in this environment.”
Sanni admittedly was satisfied with her performance. “But I agree that our intensity level was kind of low and that we should be more intense,” she said.
