Mountaineers sail past Navy 4-0 in NCAA soccer tournament
MORGANTOWN — No. 4-seed West Virginia scored three second-half goals, including two from junior forward Deana Everrett, to power the Mountaineers (16-4-2) past Navy (14-5-4) 4-0 Friday night in NCAA first-round action at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
The Mountaineer offense generated a season-high 31 shots on the night, the most since taking 33 against Syracuse on Sept. 22, 2006.
WVU also received goals from seniors Ashley Banks, her 14th of the season, and Kim Bonilla, her seventh of the year. The goal is the second NCAA goal for Banks, adding to her score against Hofstra in 2005.
“We talked all week long about how we’ve had two strong opponents to close out our Big East season and Navy hadn’t had the opportunity to face as good of opponents as we did,” said head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown.
“We felt that if we could come out with that speed of play that we used in those two games that Navy might not know what to expect.”
Banks, the co-Big East Offensive Player of the Year, put the Mountaineers on the board first in the eighth minute. Defender Greer Barnes made a run forward and worked the end line, finding a wide-open Banks on the far side. Banks settled the pass and beat Navy’s Lizzie Barnes from 6 yards out for the 10 lead.
The West Virginia defense was outstanding in holding the Midshipmen to zero shots in the first half. The first Navy shot did not occur until the 53:02 mark in the second half.
Everrett scored her first goal in the 50th minute on a pass over the top from junior midfielder Lisa DuCote.
Bonilla pushed the lead to 30 at 58:37 with a fancy offensive move. The senior forward spun on a defender and fired a shot from 18 yards out for the score.
The final WVU goal came in the 65th minute on a second attempt from Everrett. After her initial shot was blocked inside the box, the forward connected on her second attempt to find the back of the net. Everrett notched her sixth career multi-goal game.
The four-goal effort matches the largest single-game total in NCAA postseason play for West Virginia, equaling its 42 victory over Loyola, Md., in the first round of the 2003 NCAA tournament.
Freshman Kerri Butler made two saves on four Navy shots, pushing her record to 7-0-1 on the season. Barnes made nine saves in the loss for Navy.
West Virginia resumes play at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Mountaineers will play host to James Madison, 2-0 winners Friday afternoon over Penn, in the second round of the NCAA.
Ticket prices are $7 for adults and $5 for youth and students.
