WVU women blow out St. Francis, 81-29
BY MICKEY FURFARI FOR THE TIMES WEST VIRGINIAN
MORGANTOWN — Coach Mike Carey used his regulars sparingly Friday night as the West Virginia University women’s basketball team romped to an 81-29 rout of St. Francis (Pa.) in a nonconference game.
“We got off to a good start, up and down the floor, and it was good to play everybody,” he said. “Nobody played a lot.” Olayinka Sanni, 6-2 senior center, led the way with 14 points and 11 rebounds. It was her second straight doubledouble and 11th of her career as the Mountaineers made their record 2-0 on the season.
Meg Bulger scored 11 points playing only 14 minutes. No other player hit double figures for WVU.
Smantha Leach was St. Francis’ leading scorer with 10 points.
West Virginia built a 46-12 bulge at halftime and was in front by 57-22 when Carey benched his starters with about 11 minutes left in the game. A total of 14 players saw action for the Mountaineers.
The home team shot 47.8 percent from the field (32-67) while limiting the Red Flash to 23.3 percent (10-43). WVU also managed a 40-28 margin in rebounds.
St. Francis turned the ball over 27 times compared to just six by WVU, which had 22 assists to six for the befuddled Red Flash.
“We played hard,” Carey said. “We were able to do what we had to do. We set the pace, got a good lead, and built on it.”
Carey thinks St. Francis will get better under Susan Robinson Fruhtl, the Red Flash’s new head coach who is a native of Doddridge County and former Penn State and Olympic star.
The Mountaineers play again Sunday when Cornell visits the Coliseum.
