Huggins lands big-time recruit By Mike Casazza Charleston Daily Mail
MORGANTOWN— The early signing period for men’s college basketball began Wednesday, and West Virginia coach Bob Huggins made his move by getting Mt. Vernon (N.Y.) power forward Kevin Jones to sign a national letter-of-intent. Jones is 6-foot-7 and 210 pounds. He picked WVU over Pitt and Indiana, as well as many other schools that made overtures, including Rutgers, St. John’s, Seton Hall and Massachusetts. He made his decision at his high school in a ceremony that featured the principal and the town’s mayor. Jones is the first player from Huggins’ first full WVU recruiting class to sign. Roscoe Davis, a 6-10 post-graduate player at Hargrave (Va.) Military Academy, and Darryl Bryant, a 5-10 point guard from New York City’s St. Raymond’s High, committed previously but did not sign Wednesday. WVU was expecting their letters, but the early signing period runs through Nov. 21. Jones averaged 22 points and 11 rebounds as a junior last season and is ranked by the Rivals scouting service as the No. 24 power forward in the 2008 recruiting class. However, Jones would rather be more versatile and utilize his accurate shot by playing small forward in college, which is apparently the reason he decided against Rutgers and St. John’s, which wanted Jones as a power forward.
