This is a question that I have actually wondered about myself...
I'm assuming this question is based on the fact that the University pays these players...
I would say pay them some sort of living stipend... because rent and food can get quite expen$ive. But, they go on away trips for free (obviously), but honestly, give them some sort of compensation.

YES YES YES!!! Listen just not football players should be paid but ALL student athletes!! Come on the NCAA are the ones making BILLIONS off of these kids!! Yes we get a nice paycheck for a BCS Bowl game but the NCAA gets alittle nicer one!! FOX and ABC are paying HUGE AMOUNTS of $$$$$ for the rights for the BCS!! Plus they get 50% of all advertisement from the game!!! The BCS game is getting closer to Super Bowl in ad money!! Now I know you can't pay a kid the same amount as the pros but you could make it a little more easier for a junior to decide on to come back or not!!! How about a Red Shirt freshman??? YES they practice and help the team and they are on the team!!! The amount we can argue with but the NCAA has to loosen up alittle or they are going to have some problems down the road!!! I see a day when College Football and Basketball DOES NOT have 1 senior!!!!! In the late 90's I remember a small college in Ohio got busted for one of the worst rules in college football!! The coach was having a late film watching after a evening practice. He told an aid to run to the local burger shop and get 100 hamburgers!! He give the kid his personal credit card!! The year went on and near the end of the year a NCAA Investigator showed up!! The burgers for the teams and coaching staff were considered gifts and the University was fined and put on suspension!!! THAT IS A LOAD OF SHIT!!!! The story of Ray Ray McElrathbey from Clemson had to have some strings pulled so people could help him raise his brother!! The kid couldn't even get welfare because it would have been a gift from the state!! The NCAA needs to have their ass kicked!! We are the ones that pay their salaries and I think we should have a voice in the matter!!! AND I HAVE A PRETTY DAMN LOUD VOICE!!! PAY THE KIDS THEY DESERVE IT!!!

I think it would cause a lot of problems but something needs to be done.

Call me old school, but I think that amateur athletes are - and should be just that - amateurs. I agree that there is a problem with the escalating number of college players entering the draft before their Senior season is complete. I think the NFL, NBA, NHL and MLB should all impose a rule that their college eligibility should be expired before they can be eligible to enter the draft or signed as a free agent. Most of these kids that are entering the draft early are given a free ride in college by having their tuition taken care of. What does that add up to? At a state institution it is quite a few bucks.
The NCAA should change their rules if buying a cheeseburger for a kid is against the rules. That's just ridiculous.
The money these colleges and the NCAA make off of sporting events doesn't always go to just the sport being played. It helps fund many different sports at the college.

I think the logistics for paying these kids would be impossible to work out. Would the star player get more than the scout team player? These kids actually get a free education and they do get money for food and clothing..........a lot more than kids from a depressed neighborhood would ever have available. They also get gifts for attending a bowl game, which most teams do nowadays. If you saw what our kids got from the Fiesta Bowl, total value was like $1700 (don't quote me on that number).

Come on not EVERYONE at WVU gets a free ride!! Yes some get an allowance that help with food and cloths! But quit watching The Program and head to the campus and see what really goes on!! Right now Devin has 3 childern to take care of!! I understand thats not our problem but we need to take care of the athletes!! Not just football but every NCAA Sponored sport!! The university and the NCAA make enough money to pay these kids something!! The NCAA could set up a pay grade!! Don't most jobs today have pay grades!!! Now I don't want to pay these kids NFL money but something to help them get along!! I also think it would help keep kids in school so they finish their schooling!!! Most of the athletes use the full year to work on their game and have no time for anything else but sports and school work!! We are here to support not put down the kids!!! Remember some of us have been there or will have a kid there!!!

I am SOOO very divided on this issue, I can't wrap my brain around it. On the one hand, these kids risk their health for our entertainment and the NCAA makes a huge chunk.. On the other hand... Kids that are in the Band can't even get a Band scholarship to pay for tuition. As a matter of fact, Band has to have have band boosters to pay for away games and other appearances. This is The Pride of West Virginia and they can't even get scholarships?
At least with Football and basketball you have the opportunity for the amazing salaries if you work your butt off and have some tallent and that includes a free college education as a back up plan should you choose to persue it seriously.
When I was a student at WVU I lived in the Towers as a freshman. Back then freshman players were required to live in the dorms, like everyone else.. but they lived on the "football floor of Tower 3. That floor was MUCH nicer than my floor 2 floors up. They also ALL the players had ALL catered meals in a banquet hall on the Towers Campus and they ALL also had a free "taxi" service so to speak to take them wherever they wanted to go.. Football players didn't take the PRT or the Drunk Bus or call a cab.. And this was WAY back in the day.
In a nutshell.. college football has gotten WAY WAY out of hand financially.. I think its a SIN that these coaches are making ungodly amounts of money. The bigger your college is.. and the bigger your staduim is.. the more successful you can be and you can afford a bigger better coach.. Do you know that MOST of the SEC schools don't even offer Free tickets to students anymore, because thats viewed as lost revenue? These are students paying through the nose already for tuition, and they can't even go watch their own team play?
Noel Devine has 3 children.. Other players have empoverished parents or other financial burdens.. They have a shot at least of making it to the big time in the NFL or at least getting a FREE college education as a secondary benefit. How many other single parents have the opportunity to attend college for free?
Yeah I understand they provide tons of entertainment and bring in revenue.. But is it really worth more than a free post secondary education?
