MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – LaQuita Owens scored 21 points and Olayinka Sanni added 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead 18th-ranked West Virginia to a 76-49 season-opening victory over Canisius Friday night at the WVU Coliseum.
“I thought we came out and played hard on both ends,” said West Virginia coach Mike Carey. “I thought we had it rolling in the first half and then I substituted five players in for five and we got our chemistry messed up and it took us a little time to get it back.”
The Mountaineers (1-0) jumped out to 13-point lead seven minutes into the game on 3-point baskets from Owens and Meg Bulger, playing for the first time in more than a year after suffering two serious knee injuries.
Bulger came off the bench to contribute 15 points in 18 minutes of action.
West Virginia led 38-25 at halftime and used a 16-10 run at the start of the second half to build its lead to 54-35 with 13:02 remaining. The Mountaineers’ biggest lead of the game was 31 with three minutes remaining.
“Olayinka Sanni was unstoppable inside and did a great job on the boards,” Carey said.
WVU shot 40.5 percent overall and made 10 of 28 from 3-point range for 35.7 percent. West Virginia had a substantial advantage on the glass, out-rebounding Canisius 49-33.
Micayla Dyrsdale came off the bench to lead Canisius (0-1) with 13 points. Brittane Russell added 11.
Chakhia Cole scored 10 points for West Virginia, which was able to empty its bench with five minutes remaining. Fourteen players got into the game and nine managed to score.
Bulger’s 15 points makes her just the 14th player in school history to score 1,300 career points (1,300). Bulger needs 80 points to pass Judy Eaton (1986-89) for 13th place in career scoring with 1,380 points.
“Meg came off the bench and did some good things and I was pleased to some positive things happen for her on the floor, she is still a little bit rusty but there was a lot of positive that I saw,” Carey said.
The Mountaineers return to action next Friday night facing St. Francis, Pa., at the WVU Coliseum. Tip off is set for 5:30 pm preceding the men’s season opener against Arkansas-Monticello at 8 pm in the opening game of the Legends Classic.
“First game, naturally we have to get a lot better,” said Carey. “There are a lot of things that we need to work on but at least we got the first game out of the way.”
