WVU women drub Duquesne, 91-64
PITTSBURGH — Olayinka Sanni scored a career-high 29 points Friday night, leading the West Virginia University women’s basketball team to an impressive 91-64 victory over Duquesne.
Leading by just 42-38 at halftime, the 13th-ranked Mountaineers outscored the Lady Dukes 49-26 in the second half to win going away.
In making its record 8-1, West Virginia closed on a 26-6 spree and shot a scorching 61 percent in the second half. The defeat left Duquesne with a 5-4 mark on the season.
In all, five scorers hit double figures for the offensively balanced Mountaineers.
Sanni could have scored more than 29, but Coach Mike Carey had her on the bench as WVU’s lead mounted down the stretch. Meg Bulger and Sparkle Davis tallied 14 points each, Chakhia Cole 13 and LaQuinta Owens 10.
It was a nip-and-tuck first half with eight ties and several lead changes before the visitors managed a four-point edge at intermission.
They increased that to 14 points, but Christy Little’s three-point shooting enabled Duquesne’ to cut the deficit to seven at 65-58 with 11:04 left in the contest.
But the Lady Dukes never got closer than that as WVU responded with its hot closing charge.
The two teams combined for 17 three-point goals, nine by the visitors who now are 120 all-time in A.J. Palumbo Center. This was WVU’s eighth straight victory in the series it now leads by 32-7.
After taking time off for final exams, the Mountaineers will resume action next Saturday.
