MORGANTOWN - West Virginia University president James Clements has taken the first step toward establishing those who will be involved in the search for the school's new athletic director, naming a seven-member screening committee that will review the credentials of those applying for the job.
The group is not a search committee and is not a body that will necessarily have a great deal of say in determining Ed Pastilong's successor, but it is a first step.
Clements said in a news release issued by the school that he plans to add others to a broader interview team to further screen and assess candidates as the process moves forward. The interview team will include student-athletes, staff, faculty and coaching personnel, among others.
"We are first looking at credentials and resumes," Clements said. "And then will begin the process of conducting interviews to find the very best leader for our successful athletic program.''
The initial screening committee includes two current WVU coaches - women's soccer head coach Nicki Izzo-Brown and assistant football coach Lonnie Galloway. Others on the committee are department of petroleum and natural gas engineering chair Sam Ameri; WVU Alumni Association board of directors member Nancy McCormick DiPaolo; assistant athletic director for compliance Patrick Hairston; WVU Foundation president and CEO Wayne King; and administrative assistant to the WVU associate provost for undergraduate academic affairs Shirley Robinson. Ameri will chair the committee.
The committee began its work Wednesday and will review materials and continue the process until the position is filled.
"The search is under way and an important part of the review process will be maintaining confidentiality for the candidates,'' Ameri said.
