Opportunities are something people strive for and they are the reason people make the types of decision they do. A great opportunity is exactly why new freshman forward Keaton Miles traveled all the way from Dallas, Texas to play for the Mountaineers.
Miles’ eyes lit up every time he talked about playing for West Virginia and he was very excited when he was talking about his future in Morgantown.
‘The competition, the opportunity to play, the opportunity to be coached by a Hall of Fame coach and play in the best league in America,” said Miles.
Miles and the rest of the incoming Mountaineers have taken part in the Pittsburgh Basketball Club summer league and have been getting used to the Division I level by play against many Division I players.
“It’s a big adjustment, [but] it’s fun,” explained Miles. “It’s fun because you get to learn and see how everyone is quicker, faster, stronger and to put yourself on the same court is a learning experience.”
One of the other adjustments for Miles has been getting used to the weight lifting program. WVU strength coach Andy Kettler has been working the newcomers hard. Even though the players have only been here for a week, Miles says he and the rest of the players can already tell a huge difference in their game.
“It’s been real rigorous,” said Miles. “We get to help each other when were sore and down and that’s just been the last two or three days. We’ve already started working really hard and were sore right now, but it’s a process we have to get used to.”
“I’ve always prepared myself for this,” continued Miles. “To be able to go out of the state and stuff like that, but to actually stay away from home and stuff like that is just a real learning experience. I took it as getting that sense of independence from my parents.”
This past week was also the first time Miles was able to play with all of his new teammates in person. He has stayed in touch with all of them throughout the entire school and all of them are still getting used to playing with each other on the court. He says getting used to his new teammates has been going fine.
“It’s not really different because other than on our official visit we did come up here two more times with each other,” said Miles. “So we kind of know each other and how everyone reacts to things. It’s everything we expected.”
And what Mountaineer fans can expect from Miles is for him to take advantage of this great opportunity and learn as much as he can from the Mountaineer coaching staff.
“That’s all were’ trying to do as freshman is just be like a sponge and soak up everything.”
