Senior forward Kevin Jones scored 24 points to lead West Virginia to a 90-67 victory over professional basketball team Fulgor Libertas Forli Friday evening in Forli, Italy.
Jones was 11-of-16 from the field and pulled down seven rebounds for West Virginia. Jones was one of four Mountaineers in double figures. Senior guard Darryl Bryant scored 15, while junior Deniz Kilicli had 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Freshman Keaton Miles scored 14 points, shooting 4-of-4 from the field, including 2-of-2 from 3-point range.
The Mountaineers jumped out to an 8-0 lead but Fulgor Libertas Forli led 24-22 after the first quarter (the game was played with four 10-minute quarters and a 24-second shot clock). West Virginia led 45-44 at halftime before the Mountaineers outscored Fulgor Libertas Forli 27-8 in the third quarter to take a 72-52 lead after three quarters.
“Obviously, I thought we played a whole lot better,” said WVU head coach Bob Huggins. “They didn’t speed us up the way we got sped up the other day. I thought KJ (Kevin Jones) was terrific and we were a lot better defensively. Truck did a good job running the team and getting us into our offense.”
Paul Williamson had six points, shooting 2-of-2 from 3-point range for WVU. Aaron Brown (five points), Pat Forsythe (five points), Kevin Noreen (four points) and Tommie McCune (three points) rounded out the Mountaineer scoring.
For the game, WVU shot 47 percent from the field, 46 percent from 3-point range and 75 percent from the free throw line. Fulgor Libertas Forli shot 34 percent from the floor, 30 percent from 3-point range and 57 percent from the foul line. WVU won the rebounding battle, 40-36.
Former Georgetown star Austin Freeman led Fulgor Libertas Forli with 32 points.
The Mountaineers will close out their Italy trip Saturday evening with a game against Basket Santarcangelo.
