Hey guys and gals, yes we got our asses handed to us today. Lets not get down on the team they need us they will have enough people ripping them a new one(ESPN). I know everyone is MAD and Pissed off but come tomorrow everything will be ok and we will be behind our team. I know it feels like the end of year loss last year but we will come back cause we are MOUNTAINEERS.

We need to stay behind Coach Stew... I know it's the easy thing to do to get on his ass and question the hire... BUT... it's like the one ESPN announcer said: "Brighter days are ahead for Bill Stewart."
Please please please please DO NOT jump Bill Stewart over this!

Let's face it boys and girls, there is a serious problem in Motown. ECU is a decent team but there is no way we should have had our asses handed to us the way we did today. I love Stew and I think he's a great role model, but the old adage "Nice guys finish last" keeps popping in my head. Our team lacked intensity on both sides of the ball last week and it was even worse today. I knew the defense was questionable, but I never imagined it would be this horrific. Our "Number one" offensive line was manhandled all day. With the exception of a couple of decent runs by Devine and White the offense was non-existant. Schmitt and Reynaud were significant losses, but there is no way the offense should be this dismal. If we don't have significant improvement soon, we're looking at an 8-4 season at best. I'm in no way calling for Stew's head on a platter and I'm behind him and the team 100%, but I must say I'm concerned. Even in games that we lost the last few years, we were still in it until the end, it was hard watching this one knowing we didn't have a chance. I'm trying to remain upbeat, but at his point they have showed me nothing to make me feel that way.

Its hard to get into a rythem on when the D lets a team march down the field. Our Off. gameplan is all about timming!! If we are playing catch up from the start of the game we aren't going to down well. "Nice Guys Finish Last" well could be but that has nothing to do about firing up a team. LOOK AT THE Fiesta Bowl Pregame Speach!! Bill can fire people up!! The key is TACKLEING!! Could you count the number of miss tackles we had in the 1st drive alone!!! I ran out of fingers and toes!! We are hitting just fine but not wrapping up!! Also getting beat off the line on both side of the ball. The guy who gets the 1st step is the guy who always gets the upper hand. We need to work on coverage AGAIN!! Listen from what I hear from inside the program Reed Williams is going to redshirt!! Its the smart thing for him and for us it hurts!! I can tell that we miss him just for his leadership!! Now the things that I just don't understand your a young guy, your playing Div 1 football, AND YOU CAN'T CATCH A DAMN FOOTBALL!!! How many passes were right on the money and dropped!!! Listen I have a meeting in Morgantown on Wed. and maybe I can find out some other notes and tidbits!!! Am I down HELL NO!!! Not even upset, YES WE LOST!!! I've lived through many losses over the years. Ones we should have won. I think we have all been spoiled the last few years!!! But just think if we turn this around and go undefeated the rest of the way, we still are in the BCS Champ Game!!! Remember as all good Mountaineers say "WIN OR LOSS - WE BURN SHIT"!!!! Get ready for the 18th!!

I agree with most of what has been said in this post. I believe that most everyone thought we would have some defense problems. At least in the beginning of the season. With all the younger players, rightfully so.
So let us look at the offense. We were told more passing. Our longest pass was 13 yards. 11 for 18 in passing for a total of 72 yards. That is not a passing attack. Part of the reason may be that the offense was on the field only 24 minutes. One of the announcers said that the defense couldn't get off the field. I feel the other way. The offense couldn't stay on the field.
A champion O line and we went 3 for 12 on third down. A champion O line that gave too many sacks. I could go on but I won't.
Were they looking past ECU to the meat of the schedule? Had they read too many INTERNET posts about how good they were? Were they just not ready? I don't know but when coach Stew and crew sees the film, they will know.
So we need to support coach and let him do his job. We know the offense has the talent. Have faith that coach Stew will turn them around quickly and the D will follow.
We have some strong opponents before the BE games. They can give the team the experience that prepares them for the BE. Have faith we can still make a BCS bowl.
No bad mouthing on this board.

L'ville looked like shit last week and they came back today - we will too !! Sometimes a loss is the best thing for a team, sorta like a wake up call - better to lose now than a conference game !

Great thread, guys! For some reason, this loss does not feel as painful as our past losses in the last 3 years. Sure, all losses hurt, but I know we've got a great team, and a great head coach that LOVES this team for who they are, and that loves his state. I'm a fairly young guy, but I've been smart enough to realize that you don't truly learn about something until you experience it first hand. Coach Stew now knows what it feels like to be upset and dominated by a lesser team. I can assure you, he did not sleep well last night. Hopefully he's going to be fired up and will learn from his mistakes about whatever the game film shows him and his staff, and they can regroup and be ready for Colorado in 2 weeks.
Go 'Eers!!

This post will sound schizophrenic at best. But all great fan sites need a resident schizy, a few bipolars and a cadre of obsessive-compulsives...
Wow! This was such an expected loss for all us Mountaineer fans. Not so much for the fact that we lost, but how we lost the battle at the line of scrimmage on both the offensive (Totally unacceptable) and defensive (a little more forgiveable) lines.
I am sure that Bill Stewart is using the game film and pounding lessons and instructions into the team this week from their mistakes and failings, and is allowing them to see how disappointed and perplexed that he is that their game behaviors did not measure up to the expected level of toughness of recent Mountaineer Football Teams. The tackling was atrocious; the blitzing was mistimed; and the offensive blocking was laughable. Where was the Mountaineer strength?--Bar-wis tfully gone perhaps?
And yet, as much as we stalwart and proud Mountaineer Fans are still tottering between disbelief, incredulity, anger and embarrassment, I just wanted to reappear on this great site to remind us all that the season is not over yet.
Surely, the East Carolina game will provide the coaches with enough of an instructional film to coach up the team for the remainder of the season. I loved how ECU used such great teamwork--their horizontal passes to a receiver or running back was always shadowed by a fellow teammate/tackler, something that neither Rod nor Stew have learned to do.
ECU trusted on defense that if they stayed in their positions/zones, their teammates would cover the other areas of the field (which should be an elementary belief system of the 3-3-5 that WVU ascribes to). On the other hand, our defense was relying on a "me" rather than a "team" thinking.
And I have no idea what our O-Line was thinking--as smart guys (as is the usual reputation of offensive linemen), they may have been thinking too much, or maybe they were thinking about about all the wrong things. But their play seemed thoughtless. And the result was laughable and embarrassing. Maybe it is time to start Josh Jenkins, and a few other young guys. They couldn't do worse, and maybe that would wake up the Stancheks and Isandors of the group.
This is a major year of transition. New coaching squad, new philosophies, that may not be as well-defined as Rod's was in 2007, but eons more evolved than Rod's was in his first season, when he went 3-8.
The game with ECU was a wake up call. To the coaches, the team, and especially to us fans. Do we turn ugly, and turn on this great group of young athletes, who have given us much joy over the past several years, or call for the head of Bill Stewart who is so worthy of our patience and support at this time? No--let's not go there!
I know we are better fans than those fans at the so-called Big Schools who immediately give up on a team or a coach (Zook at Florida comes to mind), and I know as a fellow Mountaineer, that we are a strong people, and that we can deal with a lot of adversity.
Let's assume that better days will always arrive. We believe that the coaching staff and players, who share our values for hard work and Mountaineer Pride, will be working harder to prove we are just as good as anyone else. Let's support our team! Let's be respectful to each other as fans, even if times get worse!
I must say that I appreciate how happy that ECU fans must be right now--I bet they feel as great as we Mountaineer fans did each time that we won as underdogs. It is the first time, in a VERY long time, that I have had a warm spot for a team that has beaten my beloved Mountaineers. I would love to see them go undefeated; and wouldn't it be great karma if the EERS to turn it around, and end up as Big East Champs; and for ECU and WVU to be rematched in the BCS Orange Bowl....I would love our chances a lot better on Jan 1/2/3 than on September 6...
Underdog wins are almost always great, as long as they are not starring Notre Dame, Pitt or Penn State.
Personal Note: I have arrived and am getting settled in Cathedral City CA. I appreciated the birthday wish from Davy--you the man! I am still getting used to the time change. And I am already getting homesick for West Virginia. I am still debating whether to take the 12 hour drive to Boulder for the Colorado game.
I drove through the Rockies on my way to California. If any of you can afford the time or effort, explore the territory south of Denver. Some of the most beautiful mountains ever--gives a whole new credibility to John Denver. However, he was right--West Virginia still has the best Country Roads in America!
GOOOO MOUNTAINEERS!!! Keep the Faith!

I like the attitudes and perspectives of everybody on here. An upset loss is always heartbreaking and deflating, but...........We are still MOUNTAINEERS, and we will continue to support our team. Yes, we were outplayed in every aspect (except punting) and yes, I feel good for the ECU fans. If we finish 8-4, I will still love my school, its players and its coaches. We still have a chance to be a very good football team. If we play a little bit better we can beat Colorado, and then we get 4 straight home games, where it will be up to our great fans to spur this team on. NEVER GIVE UP!

Good thread. We need to beat the Buffs then settle in for the home stand. We could be 6-1 at the end of that homestand and we will be sitting pretty good. I'm focused on winning the league now. I hope the team realizes that has to be their goal. Other things may come with that conference championship. In the big scheme of things the loss to ECU won't matter much. I am for the most part staying upbeat. I want to know if Stew and the Seniors on this team can show leadership thru adversity. We might as well learn this lesson now rather than at the end of the year.

By looking at the league so far I think winning the BE and going to a BCS is in site.

Exactly, admittedly this isn't going to be a strong year for the Big East but there will be some teams who will fight us. USF will be a challenge but also here. We get Cincy here too. UConn, well I worried and worried about them last season and they got whalloped by WVU. We will see if the 'Ville is on the upward swing. Pitt may challenge, but I still think they are the great pretenders of this league.
