Women's Basketball: WVU Ranked In Preseason By Phil Caskey for MSNsportsNET.com September 21, 2007 MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University’s women’s basketball team has been nationally ranked in two prominent preseason Top 25 basketball magazine polls, recently released.
WVU, which returns all five starters from last year’s NCAA second round team that boasted a 21-11 overall mark and 11-5 BIG EAST record, is ranked No. 14 by Athlon and No. 24 by Lindy’s. In addition, WVU was ranked No. 23 in ESPN.com’s early preseason poll last April.
“These rankings show how far we’ve come as a program,” Head Coach Mike Carey says. “We’re proud of the recognition but they don’t mean a lot at this time. But it should give our players something to work towards and certainly give them something to prove.”
The rankings mark the first time during the Mike Carey era that the Mountaineers have received national preseason recognition.
This season, WVU boasts the largest senior class in school history (seven) and returns nine letterwinners from last year’s team that held opponents to just 56.3 points-per-game.
Preseason practice for the 2007-08 campaign begins, Friday, Oct. 12.
