Do you remember when ... ? All the girls had ugly gym uniforms? It took five minutes for the TV to warm up? Nearly everyone’s mom was at home when the kids got home from school? Nobody owned a purebred dog? When a quarter was a decent allowance? You’d reach into a muddy gutter for a penny? Your mom wore nylons that came in two pieces? All your male teachers wore neckties and female teachers had their hair done every day and wore high heels? You got your windshield cleaned, oil checked and gas pumped, without asking, all for free, every time? And you didn’t pay for air? And you got trading stamps to boot? Laundry detergent had free glasses, dishes or towels hidden inside the box? It was considered a great privilege to be taken out to dinner at a real restaurant with your parents? They threatened to keep kids back a grade if they failed ... and they did?

Or, when..
A stamp was 4 cents. A "bottle" of soda was ten cents. The entire family sat down for breakfast and dinner. Politicians' job was to serve the American people. The bigger the tailfins, the better a car looked. The car was produced by an American company. Everybody laughed at junky Japanese products (cars and transistor radios) It was "One for all, and all for one", not "You're either with us (no matter what) or you are our enemy". You wore blue jeans because they were cheap and that's all your family could afford. Scholastic achievement ellicited admiration, not animosoty. Mountaineer football fans thought 7-8 victories was a very good season. It was uncool to dress so that people could see your underwear.

Those cars with the fins needed fender skirts, A candy bar to go with the soda was a nickle, The newspaper was delivered by a paperboy' It was safe to hitchhike into town, there was a community softball game on Sat. afternoon, We had it made and didn't know it.

Or when.....
It was impossible to put $10.00 worth of gas in a Volkswagon? You had 4 TV stations, CBS, NBC, ABC and PBS? And you only had one TV? Cars only had an AM radio? A/C in a car was a luxury? You had to read a newspaper to get the previous days scores?
A great thread BTW, and it reminds me of the Tim McGraw song ' Back When"...
Tim McGraw, Back When Lyrics
Don't you remember The fizz in a pepper Peanuts in a bottle At ten, two and four A fried bologna sandwich With mayo and tomato Sittin' round the table Don't happen much anymore
We got too complicated It's all way over-rated I like the old and out-dated Way of life
Back when a hoe was a hoe Coke was a coke And crack's what you were doing When you were cracking jokes Back when a screw was a screw The wind was all that blew And when you said I'm down with that Well it meant you had the flu I miss back when I miss back when I miss back when
I love my records Black, shiny vinyl Clicks and pops And white noise Man they sounded fine I had my favorite stations The ones that played them all Country, soul and rock-and-roll What happened to those times?
I'm readin' Street Slang For Dummies Cause they put pop in my country I want more for my money The way it was back then
Back when a hoe was a hoe Coke was a coke And crack's what you were doing When you were cracking jokes Back when a screw was a screw The wind was all that blew And when you said I'm down with that Well it meant you had the flu I miss back when I miss back when I miss back when
Give me a flat top for strumming I want an ol' wurly hummin' Just keep it coming The way it was back then
Back when a hoe was a hoe Coke was a coke And crack's what you were doing When you were cracking jokes Back when a screw was a screw The wind was all that blew And when you said I'm down with that Well it meant you had the flu I miss back when I miss back when I miss back when

"It was impossible to put $10.00 worth of gas in a Volkswagon?"
I had a '63 Ford Galaxie 500 (V-8 352 cu. in.) and even when it was running on fumes it cost less than $8.00 to fill up

Product of 1980...
I remember when candy bars were .50 cents. I vaguely remember drinking soda from a glass bottle. I remember my dad's old truck not having AC I remember having only one TV I remember having breakfast and dinner as a family, every day. When I'm home visiting, we still have breakfast and dinner (and now usually lunch) as a family.
I remember when toys and games for kids were made with REAL materials, and not the crap they are made from now. A matchbox car was actually HEAVY because it was made so well!! And a kid could barely lift a Tonka truck back then.

Top 40 music singles were records with a "B" side. FM radio was in its infancy. There was only reel to reel and 8-track tape players. Gas was 31 cents per gallon. You could buy a new car for $2350.00 dollars. You could get a Volkswagon way cheaper. A nice house for $21,500.00. Our favorite toy was slot car racing.
