I went to see Mountain State Acadamey play Oak Hill Acadamey (No. 5 in the nation) last night in Beckley, MSA lost 85-63. Oak Hill was very impressive as they have two 5 stars and two 4 stars in their starting lineup. People poured into the Raleigh County Convention Center to see future WVU commits Noah Cottrill and Deniz Killicki, my estimate is somewhere in the nieghborhood of 2500-3000 people. Believe me folks, that's a LOT of people for a high school game around here.
Noah was impressive. He's pretty quick, has excellent ball handling skills and made a lot of nice passes. He wasn't all that accurate off the dribble, but when he gets a chance to set up this kid is deadly from 3 point land. He finished with 7 3 pointers and 27 points. He also looked very good from the free throw line. He is just a junior and considering the competition he was up against I left VERY impressed with him.
Killici looked great in warm-ups. That's the only really good thing I can say. I read in the paper he didn't play much in their first two games because he was nursing a sore ankle and honestly he didn't look 100%. At least I'm hoping that's the case. He appeard very slow and wasn't even close to being a force inside. He had no touch around the basket and missed a lot of easy shots. He finished with 10 points and 2 rebounds and 3 of his baskets were slams. He also missed an easy dunk and was 0-2 from the line. I'm sure he's still adjusting to the American style of basketball and hopefully he'll come around soon. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to bust on the kid because it's obvious the skill is there, it may just take a while for him to come around. I guess after all we've heard about him I was just expecting more. I plan on seeing them play more this year so I'll keep everyone updated.
