West Virginia has recruited two quarterbacks so far in this class and Scout.com took some time to look at Barry Brunetti first, a 6-foot, 200-pound signal caller from Memphis, Tenn., that could be their future starter.
Barry Brunetti ran out of the spread at Memphis University School, so he did a lot of running and did it very well. The first thing you can definitely say about him is that he’ll give the Mountaineers and athletic signal caller that can move around in the pocket to buy his receivers time or take off if a play breaks down. He won’t be required to run that much in the new West Virginia offense, but that certainly helps out when you need it as he has tremendous vision in the open field.
As a passer, Brunetti throws a very nice deep ball. Jeff Mullen’s offense wasn’t known for the deep pass when he was at Wake Forest, but having a quarterback that has good touch on longer passes is obviously a good thing. He sets up with the ball right at his chin and while his release is a bit slow, he throws a nice, tight spiral. His velocity on short and intermediate passes looks good and so does his ball placement.
Mechanically, Brunetti has some work to do. He’s not used to taking the ball from under center and while that is something that many feel is trivial, it really isn’t. It will take him a while to get used to taking the ball from center and then dropping back without the hitch he has in his step right now. He also needs to work on his throwing motion a bit by squaring his shoulders, setting his feet and not throwing off his back foot as much.
Overall, West Virginia went out and found a very athletic quarterback who throws a nice ball and can certainly run a college offense. He’s also a player that will allow Jeff Mullen to get creative with as he liked to use some trickery when he was with the Demon Deacons. Brunetti is worth every bit of his three-star ranking from Scout.com.
