If it is a penny for your thoughts but you have to put your two cents in - then where does the other penny go?

I have 2 theories on this (or is it one?)
1. With the ever-declining value of the dollar, 2 cents is now worth only one penny in buying power.
or
2. Most people, when you offer them a penny for their thoughts, end up giving you a lot more than you asked for, like their 2 cents worth.

The other penny goes to pay people to listen to your opinion.

It is a sign of todays economy. You have to work twice as much to get the same payout.

It goes to the illegal immigrant's college fund so he can learn to have thoughts on my dime, which now means I'm 11 cents in the hole.
