Well, if you didn't get to watch the game on Saturday, no problem. Just watch any taped game you have from last season. I was one of the optimists coming into this season. No more. Let me first say this. Yes Liberty was better than I expected them to be. Yes this is only one game. Yes the coordinators probably limited the playbook and kept it vanilla.
That said, here are the things that looked exactly like last year's team:
1.The best player on the field was our quarterback (just a different guy this year).
2.We have a very good field goal kicker. 4 for 4. He is a little slow getting the kicks off, but he gets quick elevation to avoid blocks.
3.We only punted 2-3 times, but we look solid there also.
4.We still have one of the worst kickoff coverage teams in the country, probably will for the entire season, and the coach is too stupid to know he is the reason. We will lose AT LEAST one game this season because our KO coverage is so pathetic.
5. Our defense gives up a lot of yardage in the first half and then does a better job in the second half.
6. We have a good, but not dominating, offense.
7.This team does not have a"killer instinct" and will lose a couple of close games to inferior teams, just like last season.
8.Looks like another 8-4 season with our head coach pontificating his usual BS about how great this team is.
The good: Jarrett Brown looked solid. Only one bad pass the entire game. An improved passing game gives us a chance to win games in the 4th quarter. Robert Sands looks great at free safety. One, almost two interceptions. Pass rush was pretty good. Julian Miller got some pressure on the QB. If we don't pressure Patrick Pinckney this Saturday, ECU will whip our ass again. Kicking/punting looks solid.
The bad: Kickoff coverage (truly pathetic). Offense couldn't finish. 4 field goals. If 2-3 of those were TDs we might be feeling better today. Defense gave up way too many yards to a Div. 1-AA team which lost most of its starters.
The ugly: We were told Noel Devine would do less dancing and more north-south running. Just the opposite. He danced and reversed field way, way too much. Against the top defenses this will be very ugly. Because the game was close, the scrubs didn't get much playing time. The 2nd team defense was in for one series, and Liberty shredded them, moving right down the field for an easy touchdown. The 2nd team offense got in with a minute to go and took 2 knees. Why do that? Why not let them run a couple of plays? It is the same old "Mr. Nice Guy Stewart." He's a great guy, but every games reinforces his lack of intensity which is needed to make this a great team.
