"It made you believe in people."
University of Connecticut Head Football Coach Randy Edsall says the reception his team received Saturday at Milan Puskar Stadium in Morgantown is not something he'll ever forget.
"That just tremendous display of compassion and sympathy and sportsmanship was something I'd never been a part of and I just wanted to thank them on behalf of our team," Edsall says of the letter he wrote this week to West Virginia University and its fans.
The Huskies received a standing ovation prior to kickoff for Saturday's game. The game came less than a week after the murder of Player Jasper Howard who was killed on U-CONN's campus.
On Tuesday, one person was charged with murder for the death of the 20 year old. Two others were charged in connection with the fight that lead to Howard's death.
Mountaineer Maniacs President Cassie Werner was in the stands during the tribute to Howard on Saturday. "It was pretty amazing," she says. "There was no confusion. Everyone was quiet. There wasn't a single boo."
Werner says it shows Mountaineer fans can be Mountaineer fans in a respectful way.
"At the beginning of the game, we all were respectful. We were quiet. We understood what they were going through and we appreciated that but, if you really think about it, once the ball was kicked off, once we started, it was just another West Virginia game," Werner said on Wednesday's MetroNews Talkline.
"We were as passionate as ever."
West Virginia University Vice President for Student Services Ken Gray says something good has come out of Saturday.
"It shows that we are very compassionate if we want to be. It shows that we're very civil if we want to be," Gray says. "What it says about us as a Mountaineer Nation, it was one of things that would bring tears to your eyes."
U-CONN is at home to face Rutgers this weekend. WVU is on the road to take on South Florida in a Friday night game.
