One shouldn't get depressed based on the result of a football game. However, it bothers me that for the 2nd year in a row we are a team that will not reach their potential. Talentwise, we stack up against any team in our league. Eventually, after almost 2 seasons, I have to place a large portion of the blame on the coaching staff. I think the best we can now hope for is another 8-4 season. We will be underdogs against Pitt and Cincy and probably at Rutgers.
1. Quarterback - C. Teams have figured out how to get quick pressure on Brown, and if they don't give him an outlet to scramble away, he is not very good at throwing the short pass on the run. I blame part of his ineffectivenss on the coaches for not making his job easier.
2. Running backs - B-minus. If you can make Devine dance and don't allow the cutback, you can contain him. UConn did it in the first half, as did USF. Still, why couldn't we find ways to get him the ball yesterday? Our top 2 threats- Devine and Saanders were invisible in the 2nd half.
3. Receivers - C-minus. Lots of dropped balls, lack of downfield blocking, didn't run to open spots. Probably should be a D.
4.O-line - D. They were mostly dominated by USF. We knew what they were going to do and couldn't do anything about it.
5. Pass defense D-plus. Our 2 cornerbacks are the worst 2 starting CBs in history. They have no clue as to doing their job. Why aren't Boogie Allen and Richardson in there? This game would have been a total blowout if USF had a better passer, and if their receivers didn't drop several passes.
6. Rushing defense -C-plus. Did a pretty good job on running plays, but couldn't contain their QB scrambling. This is supposed to be a very fast defense. They are not. Again, we knew what was coming, couldn't stop it
7. Special teams - C. Kozlowski had his worst game, it appears that USF might be te only team in the country whose KO coverage is worse than ours.
8. Coaching - D-minus. Probably shouldn't be this low, but I saw a head coach (USF) playing to win and a head coach (Stewart) not playing to win. On their first possession, 4th and inches on his own 40, thye went for it. In the 2nd half, 4th and 1 at the 50, they went for it. PLAYING TO WIN. We punted 4th and 1 at THE OPPONENTS 40. Then with 17 minutes left in the game, trailing by 8 points, 4thand 8 at THE OPPONENTS 33-yd line, wepunt the ball into the end zone, knowing your defense has not stopped them. IMO that punt was basically saying we can't win. we give up. PATHETIC. I thought the OC did a good job on the first drive. They were creative, passed on first down, ran plays that could succeed agains their defense. After that - zero. This was not a very good team that we lost to. They basically gave up in their last 2 games. In this game, our team and our coaching staff gave up.
I will continue to support my team, I will just lower my expectations and hope for a winning record.
