Linebacker Doug Rigg didn’t get to see West Virginia’s win over Rutgers on Saturday, but that didn’t stop the highly-ranked prospect from committing to WVU.
“I had a basketball scrimmage, so I wasn’t able to get to the game or watch much of it,” said the well-spoken Rigg, who committed to WVU on Sunday.
The 6-1, 220-pound defensive all-star will get a look at his high school position, but could also get a chance at some other spots on the field as well. Rigg notes that he likes playing linebacker, but would enjoy the prospect of trying other positions as well.
“The coaches told me that with my athleticism I could play all of the linebacker spots, but that I might play one of the strong safety spots. They said I could even get on offense as a third down back. I play running back in high school, and I’d like the chance to do that too. I am really excited on how they will use me.”
A speedy defender who brings big hits from his linebacker position, Rigg has equal ability to stuff the run and cover against the pass. His skills fit an outside linebacker profile, but as noted, he could also be a force at either the spur or bandit spots in West Virginia’s defense.
Wherever he ends up, he figures to make an impact. He finished his senior season with 60 tackles and five sacks on defense, and totaled 125 tackles during his final two years at Bergen Catholic. He played defensive end as a junior before dropping back to linebacker this season.
Rigg has had West Virginia high on his list for some time, and decided this weekend that the time was right to make his choice.
“My family was really comfortable with Coach Lockwood, and everyone in my family wanted me to go there,” he said of the final decision. “None of my family went there, but the relationship Coach Lockwood built with my parents and my family made them really like it. My brother thought the defense was a really good fit for me, and my mom finally said I should just go with it. I feel very comfortable there, and the scheme is a good fit for me on defense. I’m excited to see how it all works out.”
Rigg had 600 yards rushing and six touchdowns on offense in addition to his excellent defensive play. His team dropped a state semifinal decision to St. Peters to end up his high school career.
Rigg, who will have no trouble qualifying, will play basketball this winter, but then concentrate on lifting and conditioning during the spring in order to be prepared for college.
