While basketball season is still in full force as we enter March, it was football that was in the air on Wednesday at the Milan Puskar Center as the duties for the 2010 Mountaineer football coaching staff were officially announced.
Head coach Bill Stewart reiterated that incoming assistant coach Dave McMichael will be in charge of the tight ends. Recruiting duties for McMichael include New York, northern New Jersey and western Pennsylvania.
“It’s a great place to live, a wonderful community,” McMichael said of coming back to Morgantown after leaving Connecticut. “It’s certainly an honor to be able to coach for the Mountaineers again. It’s a tremendous program with the tradition that’s here and all of those good things.”
Stewart, meanwhile, said he will relinquish most of his special teams duties, splitting up the responsibilities between McMichael and assistant Steve Dunlap.
McMichael will oversee the offensive special teams units, including field goal, extra point and kickoff return. Dunlap will be in charge of the defensive special teams, including kickoff coverage, punt return, field goal and extra point block defense. Stewart will continue to oversee punting duties for the Mountaineers next season.
As has been expected, running backs and slot receivers coach Chris Beatty will assume the role of director of recruiting for West Virginia, replacing Doc Holliday.
“It’s a great move and a great opportunity,” Beatty said about the progress of his coaching career. “But at the same time, I just want to do the best job I can in every responsibility that I have. I think all of that other stuff kind of takes care of itself. I don’t want to look too big into the future because when you do, you lose sight of what’s important right now.”
West Virginia will begin spring football practice on April 6th. The annual Gold-Blue game will be held on Friday night, April 30th.
