MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia football team could again be in violation of NCAA rules. Reports surfaced Tuesday afternoon that the Mountaineers had violated rule 17.9.2.3, which states:
“During the first two days of the acclimatization period, helmets shall be the only piece of protective equipment student-athletes may wear. During the third and fourth days of the acclimatization period, helmets and shoulder pads shall be the only pieces of protective equipment student-athletes may wear. During the final day of the five-day period and on any days thereafter, student-athletes may practice in full pads.”
Photos and videos from the first two days of practice this year, as well as in 2009, show multiple players wearing protective vests under their jerseys, which would violate the dress code outlined in the first sentence of the rule.
WVU sports communications director Michael Fragale issued this statement Tuesday at Bill Stewart’s press briefing:
"We are aware that some players were wearing vests during the first two practice days. We are exploring further, will declare a secondary infraction and document it through the appropriate process.”
Stewart had no comment on the matter during his regular 5:45 p.m. press conference, and Fragale said at this time there is no forthcoming statement from Athletic Director Oliver Luck.
Another statement was released from the university regarding the time frame in which WVU will have to respond to the allegations outlined against the football program last week.
“The NCAA has informed WVU that it will have 90 days to respond to its Notice of Allegations and to expect its hearing before the Committee on Infractions to take place in February, 2011. WVU was prepared to respond under either time frame. We are anxious to move forward.”
Fragale said Tuesday that the university had initially intended to have their response prepared in 76 days.
