07/01/2011 WVU Sports Information Morgantown West Virginia University finished 40th in the final Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings, the third-best finish in school history. WVU has finished in the top 50 in the Directors’ Cup standings for four consecutive years. Last year, the Mountaineers finished 37th, posted a school-best 30th-place finish in 2009 and placed 50th in 2008. West Virginia accumulated 542.30 points, ranking third among BIG EAST schools. Notre Dame, which does not play BIG EAST football, finished 18th overall. Louisville finished second among BIG EAST schools with a 34th-place finish. Rounding out the top 100 among BIG EAST schools were Connecticut (44th), Villanova (50th), Georgetown (55th), Syracuse (61st), USF (86th), St. John’s (94th) and Marquette (96th). "Our 40th-place finish in the Directors’ Cup caps off a solid year for our department,” says Director of Athletics Oliver Luck. “Along with a very strong APR score, it shows that our athletes are performing in the classroom and in competition. Four straight Top 50 finishes is a nice achievement, but there is always room for improvement. Our next goal is to consistently finish in the Top 30 and then we can set new standards from there." The Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution’s finish in up to 20 sports – 10 women’s and 10 men’s. Complete standings and the scoring structure can be found on NACDA’s web site at www.nacda.com
