The West Virginia Mountaineers women’s basketball team started summer practices on Monday. The team met at the Coliseum for their first of three practices this week, with ten total scheduled for the summer.
With their trip to Europe fast approaching, Head Coach Mike Carey seems intent on getting the basics down before international play.
“We met as a staff yesterday and broke down what we wanted to get in for this,” says Carey. “Just a couple quick hitters, a couple out-of-bound plays, mainly most of the teaching on our offense and defense.
“The important thing for me is to get some of the drills we do in, so they are accustomed to that. So they understand what is going on, understand what we want on offense, the spacing.”
From August 8th through the 18th, the Mountaineers will tour across France and Italy. They will make stops in Paris, South of France, Monte Carlo, Lake Como, Florence, Rome, Ancient Rome and Holy Rome. The team will play three games, with the first against a French club and the final two against Italian Lega clubs. Coach Carey says the trip will mean a lot to his team.
“I think it will be good for this team, for the players,” says Carey. “It will give us an opportunity to evaluate a little bit more; where our strengths are, where our weaknesses are. We’ll see where we’re at, get film on our players, and see what we can do when we get back to school.”
Sophomore Guard Taylor Palmer says the trip will give the Mountaineers an advantage early on in the season.
“I feel like the experience, us playing together and working as a team early will be a great experience for us,” says Palmer. “Especially because no one thinks we are going to do anything this year. So I feel like playing as a team, organized, not just like open gym, will help us because we will have a little more experience than most teams coming in with a whole bunch of freshmen.”
Junior Center Asya Bussie believes the trip will also help with the ladies’ team chemistry.
“This should be a good trip for us,” says Bussie. “We have three games and we’ll be there for ten or eleven days so we’ll have a lot of time to bond and get to know each other off the court as well.”
The ladies’ last overseas tour was back in 2007, playing five games in Australia. Travel to play in foreign countries is allowed by the NCAA only once every four years. The men’s basketball team will also take their tour this summer, playing in Italy.
