Senior Kevin Jones scored 15 points while fellow senior Darryl Bryant scored 13 to lead West Virginia to a 91-39 win over NAS Sigonella at the Naval Air Station in Sigonella in Catania, Sicily.
Jones was 6-of-12 from the floor with four rebounds and a team-high five steals. Bryant was 4-of-8 from the field, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range. Bryant also dished out a game-high seven assists.
Junior Deniz Kilicli and freshman walk-on Aric Dickerson each scored 12 points for WVU. Kilicli was a perfect 6-of-6 from the field, while Dickerson went 4-of-5 from the field, all from 3-point range.
“I thought we played hard,” said head coach Bob Huggins. “I thought it was really good for our younger guys. We rebounded the ball pretty well in spots, and Kevin Jones was really good, especially early when he got us settled down and into things.”
Freshmen Pat Forsythe and Keaton Miles led WVU on the boards with eight and seven, respectively. Freshman Tommie McCune, redshirt freshman Kevin Noreen and junior Dominique Rutledge each added six boards for the Mountaineers.
West Virginia led 43-23 at halftime.
For the game, the Mountaineers shot 47.2 percent (34-72) from the field and 54.5 percent (12-22) from 3-point range, while NAS Sigonella shot 29.4 percent from the field. The Mountaineers outrebounded NAS Sigonella, 46-28.
The Mountaineers will continue their trip on Thursday with a tour of the Naval Air Station Sigonella, followed by a game against the same team Thursday evening. WVU will depart for Rome early Friday morning.
