Sportsline Interview: Bob Huggins
Mountaineer head basketball coach Bob Huggins was a guest Wednesday evening on the MetroNews Statewide Sportsline. Earlier in the day, it was announced that freshman guard Jabarie Hinds had been cleared to play by the NCAA eligibility center. Huggins said they were confident going in that Hinds had done everything he needed to do to qualify, they were just waiting on the official word from the NCAA.
“We thought we knew that it was kind of a foregone conclusion (that he would qualify), it was just a matter of time,” Huggins said. “This time of the year you’ve got football in full swing and (the NCAA) is trying to get football guys on the field, they’re trying to get soccer players on the field and cross country. So, it’s a busy, busy time for them.”
Hinds, of course, didn’t make the trip overseas with the Mountaineers do to those initial eligibility concerns. However, Huggins said he brings a new dimension to the team overall athletically.
“He brings quickness that we haven’t had,” Huggins said. “He’s got the ability to get the ball in the lane against just about anybody. Obviously he lacks some size and strength, but in terms of just quickness, lateral quickness and first-step quickness, he’s special.”
Meanwhile when looking overall at that recent trip to Italy, Huggins said that freshman Pat Forsythe was the most consistent of the newcomers.
“He blocked shots, he changed his shot, he rebounded the ball and he scored the ball for us,” Huggins said. “I thought Pat (Forsythe) on a consistent basis was probably the best freshman that we had out there.”
