Over 600 people were in attendance at the first ever Bob Huggins Fish Fry at the Waterfront Place Hotel on Friday night to help raise money for both the Norma Mae Huggins Cancer Research Fund and the Remember the Miners Scholarship Fund. There were many former Mountaineer basketball players in attendance to help raise money for the event.
Some of the former Mountaineer basketball players in attendance included Da’Sean Butler, Joe Mazzulla, Mike Gansey, Wellington Smith, Rob Summers and many more. There were also a lot of former football players in attendance including Reed Williams, Scott Gyorko and many more.
Former Marshall wide receiver Randy Moss also took part in the event and unveiled a new Remember the Miners NASCAR Truck racecar, which will be part of his NASCAR Truck Series race team.
WVU head coach Bob Huggins is glad this type of event was made possible and he is happy the money they raise will benefit two great organizations.
“I think that’s a very worthwhile organization and the other half goes to the cancer center,” said Huggins. “Who hasn’t been affected by cancer and who doesn’t want to find a cure for this terrible disease? It’s just two great causes.”
The one thing Huggins is happy about the most is all of the money the fish fry raised will stay in the Mountain State.
“We’re in so many charities and the money gets shipped out and very little of it comes back here,” explained Huggins. “In this case every dime stays here and it will go to scholarships and it will go to cancer centers.”
“It’s the right thing to do,” continued Huggins. “My mother was born and raised here, my father was born and raised here and I was born here and lived here for quite a while. These are our people and anything we can do to help we certainly want to do.”
