College Park, Md.--No. 18 West Virginia hung on to beat rival Maryland 37-31 at Byrd Stadium in front of 53,627 today.
The result wasn't the dominating win that seemed likely at halftime when WVU led by 17 points.
Instead, it took defensive back Eain Smith intercepting a pass by Maryland quarterback Danny O'Brien at the Mountaineers 13-yard line with 1:13 left in the game to secure the win.
The Mountaineers, now 3-0, were doing just about everything right to take the lead at halftime lead, 27-10.
But O'Brien and his Terrapins marched within a field goal (34-29) with just 10:29 to play to negate the huge halftime lead held by the Mountaineers.
West Virginia drove 65 yards and got a 15-yard field goal by Tyler Bitancurt to make it 37-31 with 4:42 to play.
Mighty LSU is up next for the Mountaineers.
