Former WVU President Gene Budig has a role in helping the Mountaineers stabilize the situation with the athletic department now that the Big East Conference seems to be dissolving . Budig, who also helped WVU choose current President Jim Clements when there was a leadership void, says followers of the Mountaineers shouldn't fret.
"The University will be just fine as it is today academically and athletically ," Budig said during Monday's MetroNews Talkline. "the University has so many things going for it.
"The academic program (at WVU) has made enormous progress in the past decade," Budig said. "And you needn't stay up at night wondering if the 16th ranked football team will have anyone to play. They will and they will continue to prosper."
Budig, however, would not commit when asked what is the best conference option for WVU right now.
"Yet to be determined," Budig said. "But all options are being explored actively as we speak. I can assure you, every considerable option that means progress for WVU is being explored and they have been explored for about the past ten days now.
"I think things are moving rapidly," Budig added. "It's simply a matter of telling WVU's academic story. It has to be told in a forth-right and aggressive manner.
"We'll know a lot more in the next couple of weeks," Budig said.
"One thing that is of enormous value is the stadium," Budig said. "It has become an enormous asset. I think the day will come very soon when you will see another 8-10,000 seat added. And look at the huge television ratings the school draws for both football and basketball."
