MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- Students with West Virginia University's Mountaineer Maniacs have begun a "T-shirt amnesty" program that will allow classmates to exchange vulgar shirts seen around campus and at football and basketball games for a $20 voucher to buy an officially licensed T-shirt.
With the No. 2-ranked LSU Tigers coming to Morgantown Saturday for a nationally televised, prime-time football game, WVU officials and student leaders want to discourage anyone from wearing shirts that feature an expletive.
During WVU's win over Marshall on Sept. 4, an ESPN camera caught a glimpse of a student wearing such a shirt.
Students can bring their T-shirts with the expletive to the Mountainlair student union, and exchange it -- no questions asked -- for a voucher to buy a licensed shirt at the WVU Bookstore, the Book Exchange or WVU's Team Shop in the Coliseum, according to a WVU news release.
Students can return the shirts and receive vouchers at a table near Hatfield's in the Mountainlair from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. today <co Thursday> and Friday.
Earlier this month, WVU Athletic Director Oliver Luck wrote an open letter to fans asking them to reconsider wearing the vulgar T-shirts. He also asked that if fans see another person wearing the shirt, then "politely ask him or her to change or to cover it up."
