There is quite a bit going on surrounding the Mountaineer football team this week. There is the big game against 2nd ranked LSU, ESPN’s “College GameDay” is going to be in town, WVU seems to be the topic of every single conference realignment conversation and not to be forgotten the Mountaineers will honor one of its greatest players ever this weekend.
Former All-American linebacker and College Football Hall of Fame Inductee Darryl Talley will be honored for his accomplishments. Talley was recently selected into the National Football Foundation’s College Football Hall of Fame. The university has a group of activities planned to honor Talley in this on campus salute, which starts with a luncheon at the Waterfront Place Hotel on Friday.
Director of the WVU Varsity Club, Dale Wolfley, put the event together. He’s hoping this event will be a great ay to honor Talley for his accomplishments on the field.

“He’s a very humble guy,” said Wolfley. “He did a lot of things for other players to be successful. He did a lot of things for the teams that he play for to be successful. I’m sure this means a lot to him. It’s a lot for him right now, but I’m sure once he gets back on campus he’s going to enjoy every bit of it.”
Some of the speakers at the luncheon include: former WVU head coaches Don Nehlen and Frank Cignetti, NFL career sack leader Bruce Smith, NFL running back great Thurman Thomas, former Lombardi Award winner Cornelius Bennett and many of Talley’s teammates at WVU.
Talley spent 12 seasons in the NFL and never missed a game during career with the Buffalo Bills. Talley is the Bills’ all-time leading tackler with 1,137 in his career. He also had 38.5 sacks and 11 interceptions during his time in Buffalo. As a Mountaineer, he had 282 unassisted tackles, 202 assisted tackles, 28 tackles for loss and 19 sacks in his four-year career at WVU.
Those are all impressive numbers and it certainly shows why he deserves to be a member of the College Football Hall of Fame. Wolfley says this on campus salute was put together to honor Talley for everything he’s done for the University.
“With the magnitude of this event, for Darryl, for the University and for the state of West Virginia and for Mountaineer nation. This is really important,” explained Wolfley. “This is a once in a lifetime chance. We want to sell tickets to this. We want to welcome Darryl back and say ‘hey thank you very much for coming to West Virginia University. Thank you for playing so hard as you did and just thank you period.’”
