CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The final national ratings numbers are in on last Saturday's LSU-West Virginia football game.
The ABC national TV game between No. 2 LSU and the 16th-ranked Mountaineers was the highest-rated show of the night, but it also had the lowest rating of the four prime-time ESPN/ABC feature college football games this season.
LSU's 47-21 victory over WVU had a 4.1 Nielsen rating (percentage of 115 million U.S. TV homes), translating to 4.679 million households and 6.503 viewers.
The top-rated ABC/ESPN prime-time game this season was No. 1 Oklahoma at No. 5 Florida State on Sept. 17 on ABC, with a 5.8 rating (6.608 million homes, 9.307 viewers).
The season opener on Sept. 3 at Arlington, Texas, between No. 3 Oregon and No. 4 LSU posted a 4.6 rating on ABC, with 5.308 million homes and 7.751 million viewers.
The first night game in the history of Michigan Stadium, a Notre Dame visit Sept. 10 to the Wolverines' "Big House" on ESPN, had a 4.5 rating (translates to a 5.2 on ESPN, which is available in just over 100 million homes). That game reached 5.111 million households and 7.541 million viewers.
As for the College GameDay telecast on ESPN last Saturday morning on the West Virginia campus, university officials estimated the morning crowd on Mountainlair Plaza at 13,000. An ESPN spokesperson said that figure "was up there with some of our larger crowds," with 18,000 last season at Missouri the recognized record.
There also have been a few crowds in the 15,000-range to appear for the live show, according to ESPN.
The TV rating on ESPN for GameDay last Saturday (10 a.m.-noon) was a 1.6 (percentage of ESPN homes), which is the same as the previous Saturday (Sept. 17) outside Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee, Fla.
College GameDay and the ABC prime-time telecast game this week feature No. 8 Nebraska at No. 7 Wisconsin.
