MORGANTOWN -- The Charleston Gazette has learned West Virginia coach basketball coach Bob Huggins has landed a commitment from 6-foot-3 combination guard Eron Harris of Lawrence North (Ind.) High.
Harris visited WVU this weekend and gave his word to Huggins and assistant Larry Harrison.
"It just felt like the best fit for me," Harris said Sunday morning. "I felt a need for me in a sense."
Harris, 170 pounds, is a senior who said he'll sign with the Mountaineers in November. He said he also had offers from Wisconsin, Dayton, Loyola, Evansville, Georgia State, Buffalo and Jacksonville, among others. He's rated a three-star prospect (out of five) both by recruiting services Rivals.com and Scout.com. Harris played AAU ball for the Indiana Elite team.
"I can put the ball on the floor and have a quick first step," Harris said. "I think what they like is I'm a consistent scorer. I'm not the best shooter, but I can get hot. Also, defensively, I've put a lot of work into my game. I take pride in it now."
Harris said he can play either point or shooting guard and gets a lot of points driving the lane as well as on kickout jumpers.
"West Virginia called a couple weeks ago," Harris said. "They wanted to come to my house."
Lawrence North is a 4-A Indiana division school.
"Last year we were .500, which is terrible for us," said the player. "Usually, we're a powerhouse in our state. This year, we should be back on track. We have a good chance to win the states. I'm feeling good about it."
Harris said he averaged 13 points last season, although he "wasn't the main man."
"This year," he said, "should be my year."
Harris said he also used to play football, but is "a one-sport guy now."
