Morgantown
Former WVU quarterback great Major Harris has been a part of some of the greatest games in Mountaineers history. He said last Saturday’s atmosphere for the LSU game was one of the best atmospheres he’s ever seen in Morgantown. It was so good it got Harris to thinking about how West Virginia would do in another conference.
On Saturday Harris was in Morgantown with a bunch of other former WVU quarterbacks for the Don Nehlen Quarterback Scholarship Weekend. One of the things he talked was how he wants the Mountaineers to find a new conference because he’s not too confident in the Big East.
“Hopefully we can jump ship like all of these other schools and get into a good conference,” stated Harris. “[I’m] not saying the Big East is a bad conference, but the way you see teams jumping ship it’s almost like it’s in a sinking ship.”
On Sunday, the Big East presidents said they’re going to let Big East Commissioner John Marinatto expand the conference. Multiple reports have indicated the conference is pursuing the likes of Central Florida, Navy, Army, Air Force and many other institutions.

One of the things that concerns Harris is that the conference is still unstable and he feels that will hurt the Mountaineers in recruiting.
“If they see a team that’s in the Big East and a lot of teams are jumping ship and you’re still there they might say ‘well, I might want to go somewhere else,’” said Harris.
“I think once we get into a different conference and get settled then I think it’s going to help us recruiting wise,” continued Harris.
One of the conferences that’s standing out in Harris’ mind is the SEC. The Mountaineer great feels West Virginia has the talent and they have the type of atmosphere that would fit perfectly in the Southeastern Conference.
“The football down there is tremendous,” said Harris. “If you go undefeated in that conference you deserve to be one of the top schools in the country. That’s why I was so impressed with Cam Newton last year for what they (Auburn) did.”
“I’m hearing a little buzz about the SEC,” continued Harris. “That’s just people talking, but you never know. I’m hoping we can get into a bigger conference to where we have at least four or five games at home where the atmosphere is off the hook.”
Just like many other former WVU players, Harris has no say in what conference the Mountaineers will end up in, but he is rooting for the Mountaineers to come out with the best possible outcome. In his opinion, that’s joining another conference.
“I’m just in the back room trying to cheer us on and hopefully we can end up in a different conference.”
