Four prospects from Miramar High School (Florida) will be making their official visits to WVU this weekend.
Top prospects Tracy Howard (Pictured right), Malcolm Lewis, Devonte Mathis and Trevon Coley are among the eleven recruits visiting Morgantown for the WVU-Connecticut game.
Miramar High School has been a pipeline for the Mountaineer football team. Current Mountaineers Geno Smith, Stedman Bailey, Ivan McCartney and Josh Taylor are all graduates of Miramar. That?s the most players from any one school on WVU?s squad.
Cornerback Tracy Howard and receiver Malcolm Lewis are two of the top prospects in the nation at their positions. They have offers from just about every major program. Miramar head coach Damen Cogdell says any of those players would be a great fit for the Mountaineers.
?All four of them are great kids, great students and great athletes,? Cogdell told Metronews.
Rivals.com lists Howard as the top cornerback in the nation, while Scout.com rates Howard as a 4-star prospect.
Cogdell says Howard is the real deal.
?Tracy Howard is a shutdown corner and played great at the defensive back spot and has been a three year starter for me,? explains Cogdell. ?He?s a great kid and he has qualified academically.?
Cogdell says Mathis is an excellent receiver and runner. In Thursday night?s game against St. Thomas, the second ranked high school team in the country, Mathis ran for a touchdown in the 27-20 overtime upset victory. He can play both wide receiver and quarterback, according to Cogdell. He has 20 total scholarship offers.
Coley is listed as the best defensive end in Broward County and he has ten total offers, including an offers from every single Big East School.
Cogdell has been a great asset to the Mountaineer coaches on the recruiting trail and he?s hoping that can continue. Even though he is a former player at WVU, he doesn?t push any of his players to go to West Virginia. He just wants to give them as many options as he can.
?I?m not pushing them towards the options. Whatever option they pick that?s where the kid is going to be,? said Cogdell. ?I?m not sending the kids to West Virginia because I went there, if it?s the perfect fit for them that?s where they end up going.?
?It would be big time,? said Cogdell about his player potentially going to WVU. ?I?ll tell you it?s just like the old days when they were a big powerhouse. They always had certain kids come from certain schools and they build off that. That?s what I?m trying to do with West Virginia as well.?
Cogdell says his team talks about the success Smith, Bailey and McCartney have had at WVU and how they would like to find that type of success in the future. This weekend those four Miramar players will watch the former Patriots on the field and maybe one day those players will follow in their footsteps and play in the old Gold and Blue.
There are a total of 11 official visits this weekend and all of the players from the state of Florida. Beside the four prospects from Miramar, here are some of the other players visiting the University City: Mario Pender (Island Coast HS), Eric Kinset (Miami Northwestern HS), commit Imarjaye Albury (Miami Northwestern HS), Roshard Burney (Palm Beach Gardens HS) and commit Devonte Robinson (Village Academy).
