Houston is reportedly one of the first schools to receive an invite to the newly "restructured" Big East Conference. The Houston Chronicle reported Monday night that the league extended the offer following a conference call where the exit fee to leave the league was raised from $5 million to $10 million.
According to the report, UH chancellor Renu Khator and athletic director Mark Rhoades will be meeting with Big East officials in New York later in the week. It's been reported for about a week that the league, meanwhile, intends to also extend invites to Boise State, Air Force, Navy, SMU and UCF as well. League officials reportedly met with UCF officials late last week and talked with Boise State officials by phone.
If the league does bring in those teams, it would add schools from significant TV markets in Houston, Dallas (SMU), Denver (Air Force), Baltimore (Navy) and Orlando (UCF).
