Dana Holgorsen has spent quite some time in the Big 12.
The current WVU head coach was the offensive coordinator at both Texas Tech and Oklahoma State and is very familiar with the Big 12 style of play and its competition. With WVU’s move to the Big 12 Conference being reported by multiple media outlets, it seems like Holgorsen will be coaching in the Big 12 once again.
Holgorsen says the move hasn’t been on his mind. He’s just been thinking about football and that’s all the university wants him to think about.
“I don’t have any dealing with that,” said Holgorsen during his Tuesday press conference. “If I had an opinion I don’t even know who I’d call. If I called Oliver [Luck] or Dr. [James] Clements they’d probably laugh at me and say you need to worry about Rutgers, which is true.”
“I spent 16 hours yesterday scheduling and game planning for Rutgers and came in an finished up for about four hours this morning and been doing media for about two hours,” continued Holgorsen. “So I’d like to know when I’d find the time to do it.”
Holgorsen noted during his press conference the style of the Big 12 Conference and the Big East Conference is different. Almost all of the teams in the Big 12 run a spread offense. Many Big East teams, including West Virginia, have adopted that type of offense, but there are still some schools that run a physical pro style attack.
“It’s different,” explained Holgorsen. “If you look at all of the Big 12: Texas, Baylor, [Texas] Tech, Baylor, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Iowa State – they’re all spread. Kansas State, Coach Snyder is still doing it the way he did 40 years ago, which has obviously been incredibly successful.”
“I’m only two games into the Big East, but based on what I’ve seen it’s a little different,” continued Holgorsen. “I do think that that movement is coming east. If you look at what we’re bringing at West Virginia, Pitt, Louisville and Cincinnati, there’s a shift that [offenses] are becoming a little more open.”
As for recruiting. Holgorsen doesn’t expect the move to change many players’ decision to come to West Virginia. He feels if a player wants to come to WVU they will come no matter what conference they’re in.
“We’ve got a wide recruiting base that we’re going to recruit a lot of kids from and we’ve got a lot of guys from Florida, Maryland, Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania – it’s all important to us,” said the first year head coach. “I don’t think it matters who you play. People want to come here because of what we’ve got here and I don’t think that will change.”
