Tech player in 'good' condition By Mike Whiteford Staff writer
The WVU Tech football player wounded in a shooting early Sunday morning was upgraded to good condition Monday and may play this season.
Adrian Barber, a freshman offensive lineman from Pavo, Ga., originally was listed in serious condition at Cabell Huntington Hospital Sunday after police reported a fight in which shots were fired outside the Midnight Rodeo bar in Huntington at 2:54 a.m. Sunday.
“He’s awaiting discharge from a Huntington hospital,’’ Tech athletic director Lou Talerico said Monday. “He’s in good condition. If he wants to play, he should be able to.’’

Tech football coach Shane Beatty declined comment on the incident Monday, saying the school would release a statement.
The shooting comes six days before the Golden Bears open what they expect to be a turnaround season. Boasting a roster that has grown to 130 players and refurbished facilities, the Golden Bears will face Urbana (Ohio) at 1 p.m. Saturday at Martin Field.
“We had 130 players for our last scrimmage Saturday, and I thought it went pretty well,’’ said Talerico. “We showed some good signs on offense and some good signs on defense. And our depth should be pretty good. I’m hoping the community will get behind us and support us. It’s a wait-and-see type of thing this year. It could be an exciting year for us.’’
As recently as April of 2006, the school’s football program consisted of 36 players, but the administration has emphasized greater numbers, in football and other sports. In addition, Tech ended a 24-game football losing streak on Nov. 4 with a victory over Union (Ky.) College in Montgomery.
Helped by stepped-up recruiting, the school’s number of varsity athletes for the 2007-08 school year has risen to about 400, more than doubling the total from two years ago, Talerico said. Tech has added two new sports — wrestling and men’s and women’s cross country.
Earlier this month, the school completed a $10 million renovation of Maclin Hall, a 100-room dormitory that is now equipped with Internet and cable.

very good news, seems like not a year goes by anymore without someone getting shot or in a car wreck or something that makes us realize what's more important than football
