MORGANTOWN — Nine of the 12 seniors listed on West Virginia University’s football depth chart are defensive players, with just three on the high-powered offensive unit.
In making the listings public, coach Rich Rodriguez emphasized that it’s tentative for the No. 3-ranked Mountaineers’ season-opener on Saturday, Sept. 1, against Western Michigan at Mountaineer Field/Milan Puskar Stadium.
“There could be changes day by day,” he said.
In all, 29 top players are vying for the two-deep on offense with 27 competing on defense. A 14th senior, two juniors and a sophomore are strictly specialists.
Nine true freshmen and two redshirt freshmen are listed for offense, along with three sophomores, 11 juniors and the three seniors. Defensively, the breakdown is three frosh, two redshirt freshmen, six juniors and the nine seniors.
Fullback Owen Schmitt, who’s also listed as the No. 1 tight end, and wide receiver Darius Reynaud are the only listed senior starters on offense. The third senior over there is back-up place-kicker Chris Glenn.
Quarterback Patrick White and All-America tailback Steve Slaton, both juniors, are returning starters as is Schmitt.
Up front, it’s junior Mike Dent at center, sophomore Greg Isdaner and redshirt freshman Eric Rodemoyer at guards, and juniors Ryan Stanchek and Jake Figner at tackles.
Besides Reynaud, projected starting receivers are sophomore Nate Sowers, junior Dorrell Jalloh and junior Tito Gonzales.
Senior nose tackle Keilen Dykes and senior strong safety Eric Wicks are returning regulars and leaders on defense. Other senior starters include Johnny Dingle at defensive end, linebacker Marc Magro, cornerback Larry Williams, strong safety Ridwan Malik, and newcomer Ryan Mundy at free safety. Mundy is a graduate of Michigan who has another year of eligibility.
Rounding out the defensive starters are redshirt freshman Scooter Berry, junior linebackers Reed Williams and Morty Ivy, and sophomore cornerback Kent Richardson.
Junior Pat McAfee, last year’s leading scorer, is listed as the starting place-kicker and also punter. Redshirt freshman Jeremy Kash will hold for placements, with junior Adam Hughes the long snapper.
Rivers, senior cornerback Antonio Lewis (who’s injured), and Reynaud will be kick-punt returns.
