MORGANTOWN — Coach Rich Rodriguez seemed fairly well pleased Monday afternoon with West Virginia University’s ninth day of preseason football practice at Mountaineer Field/Milan Puskar Stadium.
“It was better than Saturday,” he said after the session ended. “I could put three guys out there and do better than Saturday, and that’s saying a whole lot.
“But I’m not going to pat them on the rears for having a decent practice. That’s the way they should practice all the time.”
To media members who got to watch the first hour of drills, the Mountaineers seemed to be spirited and enthusiastic. They did some good things, especially passing and catching the ball.”
Adam Bednarik and Nate Sowers both looked good in receiver roles. They came up with numerous nifty receptions on passes triggered by quarterbacks Patrick White and Jarrett Brown. Bednarik also took some snaps as signal-caller and uncorked some passes.
“I thought they did all right,” Rodriguez said. “They are good athletes, and we’re going to play them. As I’ve said before, we want to try to get the best guys on the field to help us win. I think Adam and Nate can help us win.”
Rodriguez said if all of the players show the same enthusiasm and the same kind of intensity at the end of this week, then they will get good words from the seventh-year Mountaineer mentor. “But for now, it was just better than it was Saturday. That’s all it was.”
Asked why WVU plays loud music before and even during practice, he explained:
“We do it just to try to make a distraction. I think it’s more to get them focused on what they’re doing. It’s hard to simulate a game atmosphere. You’ve only got 12 of them with hopes of playing a 13th game.
“The game atmosphere is a whole lot different from a practice atmosphere. You go out there and look at the big, old building, and it’s all gray, no color and no noise. I don’t know whether they like (the music) or not. Haven’t asked their opinion.
“I kinda like the fact that you have to communicate louder. You have to make your calls on the defensive and offensive lines. You gotta use your hand signals … and do all the things that you gotta do in a game with the noise.level u p.
“I apologize to the neighbors (who live near the stadium). But I think it’s a good thing. We’re trying to get everybody ready to play right now, and nobody’s ready. Nobody.”
