MORGANTOWN — Coach Rich Rodriguez sounded fairly well pleased Friday as the West Virginia football squad completed its seventh day of preseason practice.
“The defense did some good things and the offense did some good things,” he said at his daily briefing following the close session. “But we have a long way to go. Next week will be all football.”
Summer session, in which several players attended classes, ended Friday evening.
Rodriguez expressed concern about mounting injuries, though none appears to be serious. He said Marc Magro, starting senior linebacker from Morgantown, was sent home because of illness.
He had come down with mononucleosis earlier in the week.
“He looked as sick as I’ve ever seen him,” Rodriguez said. “I don’t know when he’ll be back. Maybe in a few days.”
Rodriguez revealed that Jeremy Bruce has decided to transfer to Akron University. He came to WVU as a running back, but was switched to wide receiver. “He wants to play tailback and we gave him his release. He’s a tough kid.”
Thor Merrow, redshirt freshman defensive lineman, returned to practice. But two other D-linemen, Johnny Dingle (hamstring) and Scooter Berry (elbow), did not practice. Julian Miller, freshman defensive end, also was ailing.
“We’re really thin over there,” Rodriguez stressed. So much so, Eric Jobe, a redshirt freshman, was moved from the offensive line to the defensive side. He’ll get a tryout at nose guard.
Wes Lyons, the tallest wide receiver, continues to miss work because of a nagging injury.
“He’s getting further behind,” the coach noted.
The Mountaineers will scrimmage Saturday afternoon, following a morning session in helmets and shorts. Rodriguez said there will be a lot of situational stuff.
“We’re trying to find two players at every position that we’re comfortable with,” he added
