MORGANTOWN— Quarterback Patrick White hopes No. 5 West Virginia (4-0) can pick up at No. 18 South Florida (3-0) on Friday night where the Mountaineers left off in last week’s 48-7 victory over East Carolina here.
That was clearly the team’s best overall performance in all three play phases in this young season.
“It was a confidence booster for us to have the success we had (against ECU). Hopefully, that will roll over into this week,” said the 6-2, 185-pound junior from Daphne, La. “This is definitely the best team that we’ve played so far this year.
“The keys? We’ve got to execute, have a good game plan, and play better football for all four quarters.”
The Mountaineers, who are favored by one touchdown, will be trying to avenge last year’s 24-19 upset loss to the Bulls.
“Execution,” White said when asked what led to that unexpected defeat. “They had a better game plan. They outplayed us. That’s it.”
Two years ago, in the first-ever meeting between the Big East schools, WVU posted a 28-13 win in Tampa.
“I remember we got the ‘W’ out of it” White said. “I had a pretty good game, better than what I had here last year.”
The differences in approaching this game from that of last year?
“You’re definitely going to look at the mistakes you made last year and what went wrong,” he stated.
“We’ll try to fix it and try to be prepared this week.”
White isn’t concerned about going into the extremely loud, hostile environment and playing before 65,000 fans.
“We play before almost that many fans here at every home game,” he said
Even so, coach Rich Rodriguez said the Mountaineers are getting loud noise and loud music in practice this week, trying to become accustomed to what they face down there.
Seventy players saw action against East Carolina. Rodriguez said he’ll use fresh substitutes as much as possible, even though the game might be still up for grabs.
