Big seventh inning lifts Rutgers past WVU
PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Leading by 2-0, Rutgers scored six runs in the seventh inning to crack a Big East baseball game wide open and cruised to an 8-2 victory over West Virginia Saturday for a 20 lead in the three-game series.
The Scarlet Knights (8-13) collected nine hits, while the Mountaineers (19-6, 3-2) finished with nine hits. Juniors Justin Parks and Joe Agreste led WVU with two hits and one run each. Tyler Kuhn had two hits and one RBI.
Freshman Jaren Matthews paced the winning attack with two hits, four RBIs, and two runs. Teammate Donny Callahan finished with three hits and one RBI.
Pitcher Matt Giannini (1-3) earned his first win of the season, allowing one run on seven hits, striking out six and walking three in 7.2 innings. WVU sophomore Stephen Morrison (4-1) was the loser. He gave up six runs on six hits, struck out three and walked three in 6.2 innings.
The Scarlet Knights scored one run in each of the third and sixth innings. Callahan singled, advanced on a throwing error and scored on Morrison's wild pitch in the third.
In the sixth, Matthews hit a home run over the right field fence, doubling Rutgers’ lead at 4-0. The Scarlet Knights widened their lead to 8-0 in the seventh.
West Virginia scored one run in the eighth and its second run in the ninth.
In the eighth, Parks singled, advanced on a passed ball, moved to third on relief pitcher Jason Downey’s balk, then scored on a fielder’s choice.
In the ninth, Agreste singled, advanced on Chris Enourato’s walk and again on a sacrifice bunt by Parks. Tyler Kuhn then singled to score Agreste.
The teams complete the series at 1 p.m. Sunday
