WVU baseball team hosts Ohio University
MORGANTOWN — West Virginia University’s baseball team takes on Ohio University at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday in a non-conference game at Hawley Field. This will be the 78th meeting between the two schools in a series dating back to 1911. The Mountaineers, who lead the rivalry by 42-35, defeated the Bobcats twice last season, 8-1 and 6-3, home and away. The Mountaineers have a 24-7 record, including 6-3 in the Big East. Ohio is 15-12 overall and 7-2 in the MidAmerican Conference. WVU has a team batting average of .366 with six players averaging .400 or better. Freshman Jedd Gyorko leads the way at .438 with 57 hits, 17 extra-base blows and 39 runsbatted- in. Senior Tyler Kuhn is batting .417 and leads the team in home runs with six. His 53 hits include 23 for extra bases. Kuhn made the Big East weekly honor roll on Monday. The Bobcats, led by the bat of Matt Stiffler, defeated Toledo and Cleveland State last week. He batted .455 with 10 runs scored and six RBIs in those games. Stephen Morrison, a sophomore, will be WVU’s starting pitcher. He has a 4-1 record and 31 strikeouts. Zach Elmer will pitch for Ohio.
