Watch this story Louisville, Ky. (WHAS11) -- WHAS11 News has learned that University of Louisville senior cornerback Rod Council has been arrested in Haywood, North Carolina. Police say he robbed a Jonathan Valley convenience store Wednesday morning and was captured in Tennessee.
According to the incident report, Council allegedly entered the store about 4:15 a.m. and pulled what looked to be a 9mm Uzi on the clerk, who was the only other person in the store at the time.
The suspect demanded all the money and the clerk’s cellular phone and fled the store. The store’s security cameras were able to catch the suspect leaving in a silver Chevrolet Impala.
Police issued a BOLO — “Be On The Lookout” — for the suspect vehicle. A Tennessee State Highway Patrol trooper located the car at a rest area near mile marker 447 on Interstate 40 in Tennessee and detained the suspect until Haywood County detectives could arrive and take the suspect into custody.
The University of Louisville assistant sports information director, Rocco Gasparro, has released this statement:
“We were informed today that senior cornerback Rod Council was arrested early this morning. Based upon the information we received, Rod Council has been permanently dismissed from our team immediately. We do not tolerate that type of behavior in our football program. Fortunately, no innocent bystanders were injured or harmed in the process.”
WHAS11 News will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.
