WVU baseball tops Pitt, sweeps series
MORGANTOWN — West Virginia defeated old rival Pitt, 8-1, Saturday afternoon at Hawley Field for a sweep of the three-game Big East series. Sophomore pitcher Stephen Morrison went the distance, giving up only three hits, striking out six and walking three to make his record 4-0.
Freshman catcher Tobias Streich collected two hits, including a home run, and drove in three runs.
“This is a tremendous win for us,” coach Greg Van Zant said. “Morrison pitched a great game, and sweeping Pitt is a great way to start our Big East slate.”
Third baseman Vince Belnome finished with two hits, two runs and two RBIs, and first baseman Jordon Yost recorded a season-best 12 putouts. He also had one hit and one RBI.
Pitt left-hander Brian Chrisman (3-2) took the loss. He allowed all eight runs on eight hits while striking out a pair in two innings of work.
The Mountaineers (16-4, 3-0) finished with eight hits, while Pitt (6-11, 0-3) finished with one run on three hits and committed two errors.
WVU took a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Belnome hit an RBI single to score Tyler Kuhn. Austin Markel then slammed a triple to center field to drive in both Streich and Belnome. Yost then belted a home run over left field to score Markel.
The Mountaineers added four more runs in the second inning when Belnome’s RBI double to left field drove in Chris Enourato. Streich then hit his second home run of the season — a three-run shot — over left field with Belnome and Jedd Gyorko aboard.
After a scoreless third, Pitt’s Danny Lopez hit a home run to center field to put the Panthers on the board.
Lopez led the Panthers with two hits.
The Mountaineers will host Coppin State at 2 p.m. on Monday.
