MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Forwards Deana Everrett and Ashley Banks each scored goals in the second half to lead No. 22 West Virginia to a 2-0 victory over the Cincinnati Bearcats Sunday afternoon at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown.
The Mountaineers dominated play from the opening kick but had nothing to show for it after a half of play. West Virginia outshot the Bearcats 12-2 in the first half and held a 5-1 advantage on corner kicks but Cincinnati goalkeeper Andrea Kaminski proved stout in goal, recording four saves to keep the game scoreless at the break.
“We talked at halftime about what we needed to do individually. It was definitely frustrating but I just felt we needed to work a little harder to finish those chances,” West Virginia Coach Nikki Izzo Brown said. “At halftime I told them we needed to tighten our boots and get out there and get after it a little bit more.”
West Virginia (8-3-1, 4-0-1) wasted no time executing its coach’s plan, as Everrett found the back of the net in the 56th minute, recording her sixth goal of the season and the third in her last four games. Banks and Carolyn Blank each got assists on the play as Banks threw the ball in and Blank flicked it to Everrett, who pounded it into the top of the net.
The Mountaineers put the game away five minutes later when Everrett assisted on a goal, crossing the ball to Banks who headed it over the outstretched hands of Kaminski and into the back of the net. The goal was the seventh of the year for Banks.
West Virginia outshot Cincinnati (4-7-1, 1-4-0) 25-2 on the game and had a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks. Mountaineer goalkeeper Mallory Beck registered one save to record her fifth shutout of the season.
The win and the two-game home sweep this weekend was critical for a West Virginia team that now faces its next four BIG EAST games on the road.
“We have four on the road now and we had to have these two at home,” Izzo-Brown said. “It’s a tough challenge for us and we know what’s ahead. It’s just a matter of mental preparation and bringing West Virginia soccer on the road with us. We know how to win and that’s going to be the focus taking it to Providence.”
West Virginia’s 4-0-1 BIG EAST record is its best start since the 2002 season when the team started with an identical 4-0-1 league mark. On the season, WVU has now out-shot BIG EAST opponents 113-29. The Mountaineers 10 shots on goal against Cincinnati marks the fifth time this season that the team has registered at least 10 shots on goal.
West Virginia returns to action on Friday, Oct. 12, when they travel to Providence, R.I. to battle the Providence Friars. Kick off is set for 3 p.m.
